What a great read. Great characters, plot and dialogue with funny, witty observations throughout.
Bought it yesterday. Read it yesterday. Great book. Engaging story. Science fiction where the science is fun and makes sense and helps the story move right along. I loved it. Now going out to look for pulled pork.
Fun, fast read. It reminded me of the sci-fi I read as a kid and a teenager--a great story that included interesting scientific extrapolation and entertaining characters in under 200 pages. I went to college in North Carolina, so it also made me miss good barbeque. I hope to read more from Mr. Gifford.
A clever, lighthearted venture where no author has gone before, "Bobby Q" serves up science fiction, pirates and culinary adventures, all seasoned with a secret sauce of sweet homespun humor and a spicy bite of cynicism. J.M. Gifford knows how to leave his patrons hungry for more.
Great read! I had not read any science fiction in a long time but if there is more stuff like this out there, I'm going to look for it. The science is at a level way beyond my knowledge, yet I found myself very comfortable with the details -- a credit to the writing skills of the author. The blending of science fiction with a lovely love story (actually two!) is seamless and the brisk pace had me reading from beginning to end in one day.
Food in space always makes me think of astronaut ice cream, a little disappointing and dry. But "Bobby Q" was a tasty treat that I couldn't put down!
Gifford is a talented writer who carries his story along with interesting characters, plot twists, and science that explains it all in a plausible way that makes you think it will all be a reality in the not-so-distant future. This book satisfies, entertains, and makes you hungry for a sequel.
J.M. Gifford's entertaining debut novel, <i>Bobby Q</i>, serves up the tantalizing prospect that sizzling, aromatic meals will continue to feature prominently (at least for the lucky ones) in humanity's space-based future.

Gifford entices you into his vessel with a whiff of this quirky, somehow reassuring premise, then, once you're aboard, pulls you into a superorbital adventure plot motivated by the protagonist couple's entrepreneurial aspirations, relationships with each other as besties, herding of their fragile beasties, and desperate work to earn their daily feasties.

There's no shortage of pithy banter between the lead twosome. While the story takes the point of view of every-geek Ozzie, I found myself hoping we will see much more of Pele, the plucky, scene-stealing chef extraordinaire, in series sequels.

While easy reading, <i>Bobby Q</i> has meat on the bones. The chapters open with writerly, observational paragraphs worth savoring. The technology speculations regarding energy production, interorbital travel, and massive, biospheric space stations are pure Arthur C. Clarke. Given the book's central culinary conceit, I would like to have heard more speculations from the imagineering author about the animal husbandry and space ranching processes necessary to produce the perfect pulled pork parfait near Pluto.

In sum, there's plenty to carry the story forward, as well as paragraphs that are so good they almost seem out of place in a novel that slathers on the sauce. Ultimately, you either accept the Pigs in Space premise or you don't. If you don't, I must ask would you rather Gifford had written a book entitled <i>Rendezvous with Ramen</i>?
