THE SOUL SUMMONER (Book 1)

Blessed or cursed with a connection to the souls of others, Sloan Jordan can see the best in people...and the worst. With nothing more than a glance at a photograph, she can judge the living from the dead and the good souls from the evil ones. For twenty-seven years, she's kept her ability a secret, but eleven young women have been murdered in the mountains of North Carolina, and Sloan may be the only hope of finding their killer.

She has just agreed to help Detective Nathan McNamara with the case, when a stranger--who is as alluring as he is terrifying--shows up at her doorstep with a dark past and another puzzling mystery she can't see his soul at all.

Now Sloan is on the hunt for a deadly psychopath with two irresistible men. One of them would die for her, and the other would kill to keep her safe.

THE SIREN (Book 2)

All the missing victims of North Carolina's deadliest serial killer have been found, all except Rachel Smith. When the FBI produces a photo proving Rachel is alive and well in Texas, one case is closed but another one is opened. Either this is a case of mistaken identity or there are more people than just Sloan Jordan and Warren Parish who seem to walk the earth without a soul.

Along with Detective Nathan McNamara, Sloan and Warren travel south to find Rachel and solve the biggest mystery of all determining who--or what--they really are.

I love reading and I tend to based my reading off the summary. The summary was a little weak in my opinion but did catch my interest. I am so glad I gave it a chance because it is such an amazing book. The characters are far from perfect and tend to avoid the cliches that characters tend to fall into such as a woman gets into a relationship with another character and everything is perfect. Instead you have an interesting woman with her own life that includes hobbies, friends, and a career that doesn't revolve around a man. I am not bashing male characters but I cannot stand those type of books where a female character meets a male character before she loses interest in anything that doesn't revolve around the male character. I didn't know that when I bought the book set that it was two different books but I read through both in a matter of hours. When I finished I started looking to find the next book in the series but I was a little upset that it had not come out yet. It is due out at the end of July and I have already pre-ordered the third book, Very excited!

The Soul Summoner Series Books 1 2 edition by Elicia Hyder Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This was my first try with this author, so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a well-written story that struck the perfect balance between supernatural and reality, mystery and romance. The story was well paced and had me completely ensnared, pausing only for absolutely necessary bathroom breaks. Unlike a lot of books, the world building and laying the series foundation didn't feel clunky or overbearing. There was a smooth flow of questions asked and answered about what they are, so it didn't feel like the answers were just thrown at me, but I also wasn't left as confused as watching an episode of Lost. Can't wait to read the next one to see where this goes!
My first thought when I started reading the book was ‘Why haven’t I heard about this book before?’. It grabbed me from page one and didn’t let me go even when I finished the last page. I’m so glad I could immediately start reading the second book.
Paranormal is my favourite genre, but these books are so much more. There’s suspense and mystery and each page seemed to reveal another surprise. There were times I honestly didn’t know where this story was going. I love that in a book!
But there were a few times when I had a few chuckles to myself. I loved Sloan and she made me laugh more than once. However, the repartee between Detective Nathan McNamara and Warren was the icing on an already delicious cake.
I’m thankful, I don’t have to wait before I can start reading book 2.
I gave The Soul Summoner Series 5 stars! I wish I could have given it 10, 5 for each book.

This is the first read of Elicia Hyder for me. I do believe that I'll be looking for more of her books. Some readers are comparing these books to Darynda Jones' Charlie Davidson series. The only comparison to those books is that the heroine has special powers and solves mysteries. That's not to say that one is better than the other, which IMO, one is better. They are just different.
Sloan is learning more about the power she possesses when she meets Nathan McNamara, a detective trying to solve his sister's disappearance. While helping Nathan, she meets Warren, who has the opposite powers that Sloan has and is somehow mystically linked to her. From there throughout the rest of the story the reader is tossed between who Sloan will choose -- Nathan or Warren.
While she is trying to figure out which one she wants, Sloan and company work to solve a group of murders in the Summoner, and finding her birth mother and breaking up a human trafficking ring in the Siren.
The stories are interesting and the kept me wanting to turn the page. I ran the gamut of emotions from laughter to tears as I read.
I must say that each book can be a stand alone, but I do recommend reading them in order.
I'm going on to the next book, The Angel of Death, to find out what happens when Sloan and Warren are kept apart and if Nathan is really 'the One' for Sloan. I've taken a side trip to read the short novella about how Nathan came to meet Sloan.
I can recommend that you do the same.
Based in scenic Asheville, NC, this two-book bundle relies on a good romantic triangle structure and gives us a new supernatural world. Written in the first person, the books have a single POV, an attractive, extroverted, confident 27YO publicist for the county, Ms. Sloan Jordan. She owns her own small home and car. She has a college degree. Her dad is a doctor for elderly people and her mom works as a nurse in his office. More magnetic than usual, she has superpowers that lure people to trust and like her. In exchange, she makes them feel better -- happier and healthier. She has the ability to imagine someone and mentally call, or summon, him or her to her. She can look at a stranger and know whether he or she is a decent person. Bad people have a traumatic effect on her, so she avoids the county jail and people she reads as evil when she meets them. Adopted, she has to find out whether these powers are genetic, and how they work. She would like to find a boyfriend who is not under her magnetic influence. A detective thinks she can help him find his sister, missing for ten years, as well as a string of similar missing teenage girls. Will she step up?
While relatively well written this is not the book for you if you want heart rending story arcs or witty  banter. If you want a sex scene or crazy hot sexual chemistry of any kind forget it. The author isn't interested in giving you much past a lip lock or two. By the end this also meant I had zero belief in the characters chemistry with eachother... it just felt a little contrived like most of the story line across both books. I ended up speed reading my way through trying to see if it would improve because I believed it had so much potential. This book needs someone to push a gritty realistic heart into it. It's very monochrome, with some editing, some sizzling character chemistry and more teasing rather than easy answers leading to nil surprises this could be a winner series... at the moment it just isn't.
