If George Carlin and Erma Bombeck knew each other in the Biblical sense, their offspring would be genetically destined to view the world through Gay Wayman’s eyes. This “truth is better than fiction” salmagundi is a romp through life and living as only Wayman can spin it. It’s funny. Quirky. Tender. Sobering. It’s all here. Laughter, tears, philosophy and out right silliness. Common threads in our shared humanity. In one essay, Wayman recalls her 4-year-old nephew who couldn’t yet hear the difference between peanuts and penis. At a minor league baseball game, the peanut vendor wandered through the crowd hollering, “Get your peanuts………get your fresh, hot peanuts here.” Think about it. Her wee nephew did.

We all face the challenges and rewards of life--family, work, heartbreak, love, birth, death, acceptance, rejection, catastrophes large and small, and all the quirky, unexpected events that crowd our lives every day. Gay's unique take on all of this is optimistic and heartwarming, hopeful and hilarious, even when there is a literal flood running through her living room or when she has to wear the same purple dress for days on end, fighting the airlines and winter and the growing aroma of her dress, all at the same time.

She puts things into perspective: things are not so bad, and a joke and a laugh will brighten any situation. I found myself looking forward to every essay, just so I could get to know her better.

Spending time in Gay's world is a pretty fine place to be, indeed.

She's everything you ever hoped for in a best friend honest, sincere, inquisitive, uplifting, and perceptive. Her superb storytelling makes ordinary life extraordinary. Life is remarkably richer because of her joy in living and appreciation of every moment.
Liane Cordes, author of The Reflecting Pond
What fun! This is a sweet book with wonderful stories of life told by a woman with a big heart and a great sense of humor. I laughed, cried, snickered, giggled and groaned with embarrassment with the people in the stories and their life events. As I read each story I felt Ms Wayman and I were sitting over lunch and she was relaying her stories to me personally. Very touching and inspiring book. I highly recommend it!
This was a wonderful book with stories that had my howling with laughter as well as stories that tugged at my heartstrings which brought tears to my eyes. Ms. Wayman has the uncanny ability to see humor in the world around her. She's a modern day Erma Bombeck! This was a light read but left the reader with lots of food for thought. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Reading Life and Laundry Surviving the Spin Cycle is a wonderful way to relax at the end of the day and read about the adventures and misadventures of the author. The author has a very smooth writing style and gives the reader all the details needed to visualize what the experience was like. Readers may find this book to be a good stress reducer as the author recounts problems she's had to face and the ways she found to cope. Best of all readers will surely get some laughs from this keen observer of people as they go through their own "life and laundry".
You'll dive right into the "French Misconnection," and laugh out loud. Don't hold back. In fact, you should let it rip, because you'll need to get your gut in shape for all the laughter still ahead of you. And it's a good laughter, enjoyed at the expense of no one. Which, I think, is one of the points Ms. Wayman is trying to get across. Hers is a book about paying attention, with an eye toward the positive and a heart inclined to compassion. The power of it grows story upon story, and before you know it, your laughter is mixed with tears. Good tears. Tears that make you want to act better, be kinder, and laugh more often; especially at yourself. This book of treasures is a peak into the lifetime spiritual practice of one genuinely attentive woman, and it deserves our attention. Besides, everyone needs to know what a Nixie is.
The best way to manage the challenges of 21st Century living is with a commitment to do the right thing for the right reasons, to be willing to recognize the zaniness of life and finally add a huge dose of humor. Gay Wayman does all of that, and so much more. This gentle and delightful book tells of situations, not unlike those most of us have had at one time or another. The difference is she is willing to laugh and learn, while most of us skulk away, tail between our legs.
And even if we don't find ourselves in any of her short essays/observations about life, we are still entertained and charmed by them as we learn about life today. Please, please read and enjoy. You'll thank your lucky stars you found your way to this sweet book.
Gay's gift of words and storytelling make SPIN an enjoyable read. Creatively using vivid imagery, clever humor, and an amiable tone, it's a book that quickly welcomes itself into your hands. Whether she's writing about putting her baby sis in the mail or riding trees down a hill, Gay makes you feel like you're part of the story and involved in the action. In one of her stories Gay shares that Emmanuel Kant said, "We see things not as they are, but as we are." Gay's perception or perspective (or whatever you want to call it) of life is a beautiful one to read about... And adopt into your own life as well.
